Lost Folder Ownership and Access

Hello,

I set security for a drive such that Users group has full
control. Most folders are successfully accessed. But a
few folders are not. And, t have lost ownership of thru
folders. Reclaiming ownership and resetting access, is
cumbersome and strange.

When I click properties, I can reclaim ownership of a
folder by using Advanced Button in Security Tab. But
before I add Users, I have to close Properties, then go
back into Advanced Button in Security Tab. Then, when I
do, I add Users group, then I assign a single permission
and click Apply. At this point, another Users appears,
with Full Control assigned, as originally setup. I
delete the second, more recent Users, then I Apply the re-
re-appeared Users. This gives me access to the Folder.
But, i still don't have access to sub-folders AND
files. To regain access, I have to do the above
procedure on EVERY sub-folder and file!

What caused this problem? How can I regain access to
all folders and files in a quicker, simpler way?

Thanks,
karlo

There is a checkbox to replace the security setting
on child objects. This is available in the advanced
security dialog. When you use this the settings you
are applying become inherited on everything within.
Without this the settings are only inherited down to
whereever new inheritance roots were previously
defined.

Hello,

I did as suggested. First, through Security/Advance for the shared
drive, I had to reset the owner to Administrator for all subcontainers
and objects. THEN, I reset permissions for children. Doing the
latter without doing the former did not work. I would get an access
denied message for the affected folders and files.

Further to the above, I think the problem stems from my creating
folders and files from another peer-to-peer computer. When I create a
folder or file on the shared drive using the second computer, the
owner is me, karlo. There is no login user named karlo in the first
computer. However, there is a karlo in security settings, giving
karlo access to the shared drive.

I noticed that the problematic files or folders have no one assigned
as owner. Is this an indication of the root cause of the problem?
How can I create a folder or file in the first computers shared drive
and ensure that all allowed Users retain access?

Karlo,

I am pretty unfamiliar with what you are seeing, as I have
never encountered a file without an Owner after it has been
copied in over the network.

The normal behavior is for a new file to receive the default,
inheritable permissions as defined by the folder where it is
being stored, and it does not make a difference if the file is
being placed there locally or over the network.

You are obviously seeing something different, but, as I said,
I have not encountered that behavior.
