Have lost Bookmarks and the ability to save new bookmarks as well. The nice
little search bar does not allow links to Google, etc. (Note that I had to
immediately shut off power without logging off during sudden lightning storm
prior to these losses.

A corrupt localstore.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder can cause search
engines to disappear from the Search Bar and prevent the adding of new
engines. The solutions below will fix it but any customized toolbar settings
will be gone.

Firefox 1.5

Exit Firefox completely and then start it in safe mode. A window called
Firefox Safe Mode with some troubleshooting options will appear. Select the
option "Reset toolbars and controls" and choose "Make Changes and Restart".

Earlier Firefox versions

Exit Firefox completely and then open the profile folder and delete the file
"localstore.rdf". Make sure to delete the "localstore.rdf" file in the
profile folder and not the program files copy (in Windows, the profile folder
may be hidden).

Prevention

Firefox 1.5: "Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Update tab". Under
"Automatically check for updates to:" uncheck the "Search Engines" box.

Dear Sirs: Thank you so much. It works.

Would copying the profile folder and keeping in a safe place, like M
Docs or even a disc not help...

So that anything like this happens you can delete Mozilla Profil
folder and then copy and past the saved one in it's place..

Just an idea.... the up to date version is 1.5.0.4, the problem onl
ever happened to me with the much earlier versions never with 1.
