lost files upgrading 98 to xp

Hi i lost all my documents and email etc when i upgraded
from windows 98 to windows xp i was wondering is there
anyway at all of getting them back are they stored
somewhere in temp files etc i have ghosted the drive to
another drive as a backup then formatted the cdrive and
did a data recovery and still i cannot find all the stuff
and the things i do find don't open properly the
documents opoen in jiberish and the mail cannot be
imported can anyone please tell me how to get this data
back the documents are extremely important to me!
