Hello!
1]Try in Safe Mode.
To boot the computer to Safe Mode, you can perform the following steps:

a. Restart the computer.
b. Keep press F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
c. Choose the Safe Mode, and press Enter.
If the problem exists even in Safe Mode, you can try to repair Windows.

Hello!
you restart your system in Safemode and retry .
Also try:-
Start> Run and type in: devmgmt.msc > ok .
If the Device Manager opens,
create a shortcut to this file C:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc
Go to Start/Run and type in: mmc /a. Go to File and choose Add/Remove
Snap-in. Click Add then scroll down to Device Manager, Add. Save it to
devmgmt.msc in %windir%\system32.
To extract: Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in the command below:
C:\>extract d:\i386\devmgmt.ms_ c:\windows\system32
\devmgmt.msc [drive letters may vary accordingly]

where d:= CD rom Drive windows XP CD.

From a message by MVP Kelly Theriot that I saved:
Go the Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Scroll down to Plug and
Play Service and stop and restart it. Once done the Device Manager
will populate again.
