I have an HP that was running W98. My first attempt to upgrade W98 to XP Pro
failed. I was advised by Microsoft not to upgrade but to use the new install
option.

After multiple attempts, I have finally installed XP Pro. Now I cannot
access the Word and PPT files that were on the C: drive prior to installation.

I am not certain if XP was installed on a new partition or an existing
partition. How can I find out?

Any recommendations on how to retreive the old files? I have done a search
and cannot locate them on the C: drive.

Carey - from your response, I assume there is no way to retrieve these files?
Could they be in another partition of the PC?
Chris

Visit www.google.com and search for "file recovery".

If you had another partition and moved the files there, then yes, they could
be on another partition. But if you never had a second partition, it
wouldn't exist now. And if you had another partition, but didn't move the
files there yourself, they wouldn't be there. Since you don't know anything
about another partition, and you didn't move files anywhere before doing
what you've described as a new install of Windows, it's pretty unlikely that
the files are on some other partition.
