Lost contact list

Using Outlook 2003 w/SP2, I have had group contacts disappear from my contact
list. This has happened at least three times within the last year. No one
else has access to my e-mail. Only a few groups disappear, not all of those
currently listed.

Each time this has happened, I have to find a new name for my recreated
group so that the auto-fill does not use the old/missing group name in the
address window, which would then produce an error message of "an unexpected
error has occurred".

Can anyone tell me what can cause this to happen? Is there an easy way to
delete the old auto-fill names so that I do not have to change group names on
the recreated list?

Define "group".

In this case, "group" means multiple individuals listed as one contact. In
other words, a distribution list.

DLs don't disappear on their own, any more than do other Contacts folder
entries. One mistake a lot of people make is that when editing a DL and
they want to delete a member, instead of clicking Remove, then click the
Delet button (X) on the toolbar, which deletes the entire DL not just the
member. However, I would think you'd remember doing that.

Unless you can recall what was happening at the time when they
"disappeared", no on will be able to explain it. The only advice I can
offer now is, "make backups frequently."
