Lost Connection Visioneer 9320 USB

I have a new Visioneer OneTouch 9320 connected through the USB to an
XP machine. Paperport v8.8SE came with the scanner so that is what I
am using. Problem is, it keeps loosing its connect with the computer.
The only way to get a reconnect is either by rebooting or unplugging
the USB cable on the back of the scanner and plugging it right back
in. A prior message on this NG where another person was having the
same problem except with a different model of scanner got advise to
turn off power management for the device which he said worked for him.
I did the same but the problem remains.

I'm not really sure when it looses connection but know that sometimes
I look down at the task bar icon while I have been doing some work and
see that at some point, the icon X'ed out meaning lost connection.

There are other devices on this USB hub and none of them are loosing
connection so it isn't the hub.

Any Ideas as there doesn't seem to be any human beings working at
Visioneer to take care of their warranty obligations.

Regards,
TR

What happens if you right click on the X'd icon in the task bar and
choose connect? If this doesn't work, and you are using a Hub, I would
try to avoid the hub and connect directly to a single port regardless of
how the other devices connected to the hub are performing. Scanners are
notoriously picky devices when operating off hubs, especially unpowered
ones.

Thanks for your reply tomcas,

It fails to connect. The only way to get the connection back is to
unplug the USB cable at the back of the scanner and plug it back in or
reboot the computer.

1st, my hub is powered so that counts that out....

Okay.... I'll give the "Direct Connection" a try but if I do, then I
will have to use a 10' long USB cable to get there (only having to use
4' cable with the hub). I think I read in the manual to this scanner
somewhere that there was a limit to the length of USB cable that can
be used but I'll be darned if I can find that paragraph again......

I wouldn't really mind getting rid of the hub all together if that
would help. Problem is, only 2 USB ports on the computer. Now, I
know I can add a USB 2.0 card (having 4-6 USB 2.0 ports on it) to the
computer but question it... Is this nothing more than a hub on the
rear of the computer (same as I have now just not extended away from
the physical computer) or... is this better than a hub, like actually
having more USB ports right off the MB?

I look forward to your reply...

You probably mean the 6' reference on this page-
http://www.visioneer.com/support/general/troubleshooting/usbtroubleshooting.asp
I think that's very conservative, 10' direct is still better than going
thru a hub. Humor me, move the scanner to a point where you can connect
it directly.

Are you sure? Maybe there is a mobo header you can connect a back panel
to. What's the Mobo or PC make and model?

No

Yes, the card plugs into a pci slot and has usb chipsets on it. Much
better than a hub.

Okay, tried a 10’ cable directly into one of the two USB ports on the
back of the computer and the problem went away. The only time I see
the X’ed out icon now is when waking the computer up from Hibernation
and right clicking on the icon and selecting “Connect” gets it right
back with no problem.

There are mobo connections for more USB ports but they are taken up to
run the two additional USB ports that are located under a small door
on the front of the computer. This system is a local build. The mobo
is an ABIT NF7 with an AMD 2600 CPU.

Okay, went down to Staples and got a Belkin 4 port USB 2.0 card and
put it in. Assigned the USB Hub to a box full of old antiquated
computer parts. Everything PNPed just fine and all’s well in
SmallVille.

Thanks a bunch for your time and help Tomcas…
