lost animation when inserting presentation

I was given 8 PPT2003 presentations to combine. Presentation #6 and #8 were
the only two that used animation in text builds. I used "insert Slides from
file" to combine all of them, checking the "keep original formating" box,
using Presentation #1 as the basis - adding each presentation in order until
they were combined. When I looked at the result, all of the animation was
lost. Oddly, I can build forward from Presentaion #6 (#6 then #5, then #4,
etc.) and I can add to the back of Presentation #6 (#6 then #7, then #8) and
all is well. I have also tried building the combination from a "new" slide
and as long as I preceed #6 with any other I loose the animation in #6 (and
#8). I did not create the original 8 presentations but i can see the text
animation while the presentations stand alone. Any enlightenment would help
me to stop scratching my head (I cannot aford to loose any more hair). Any
ideas?

I cant see your computer so I working in the dark here!

If you use insert slides from files and tick keep source format then
animations should follow the presentation (even if the animation was on the
master slide). Therefore the problem is probably one of the other
presentations. Is it possible that a presentation has Slide show > set up
show > "show without animations" ticked.

I looked to see of the "show wthout animations was checked and it was not -
it was not checked on any of the presentations I had been given. I am running
PPT 2003 SP2 - I do not know what version of PPT was used to create the
original shows but, what is puzzeling to me is the fact that i can see the
animation in the original show and not in the combination unless i assemble
it using #6 (the one that works) as the basis for the combination. I
appreciate your thoughts (I'm still confused)
