I have lost my administrator password. Luckily I have an account without
a password, but it does not have administrator rights. I have tried
using F8 and booting in safe mode, but it still asks for a password.

This article http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm
recommends several methods, all of which are beyond my comprehension.
For example, this solution http://www.loginrecovery.com/ promises to
somehow read the password file. Can anyone tell me whether petri.co.il
is offering me sound advice, whether loginrecovery is a viable method,
or whether there is a better approach? I would sure like to be able to
install new software, etc. Please use simple terms. I am not computer
savvy.

Thank you very much.

If you have never created a password for Safe Mode Admin, then you can hit
Enter, because it should be a blank password.

Yes, it can be done. I cannot vouch for the link you gave; never heard of
them but there are several similar ones around the 'net, some good, some
bad.

Have you tried going into Safe Mode and useing the built-in Admin account
there? If you never assigned a password to it, it will still be blank; just
hit return without entering anything.

If you are not computer savvy and cannot followed numbered instructions from
the many associated tools from the website you gave - you will be paying
someone to fix it or risking everything you have not backed up.
