I have 3 usb drives F, G, H, I inadvertently clicked on H to safely remove
drive (intended to remove J, which is a flash drive.) Anyway, I rebooted
and my H drive does not show in my computer, the F and G drives are there
along with my flash drives. I tried to access the H drive with the command
prompt, no soap. How can I get windows xp to recognize my H drive
again.????

Thanks for any help

Dear Carole,

One brute force method is to unplug all your USB devices (except
keyboard and mouse - hopefully they are not USB) and then do Control
Panel / System / Properties. Select the hardware tab and push the
device manager button.
Now, expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers and, starting at the
bottom - right click and select Uninstall. (Yes I know that sounds
loony, but they will all re-install automatically next time you re-
boot). Keep working on each entry selecting Right click / Uninstall
untill you have no Root Hubs or Controllers there at all!

Now re-boot your PC and wait untill all the root hubs come back (they
self install - about 2 minutes). Now plug in your Drives one at a time
and let them get detected.

This is quite a big bang approach - but I have found it works as a
quick and dirty way to re-establish the USB driver chain kernel data
structures.

Unplug or turn off the H drive. Wait a minute then plug it back in.
