Lost ability to use exe files

I just lost the ability to use exe files. This is a very
strange problem. I cannot directly activate any program
that has an EXE extension even those in the control panel.
However, using IE, I can navigate to the My Documents
folder and when I click on a DOC or PDF, the proper
program opens up! I cannot use CMD or REGEDIT because they
are EXE programs. IE works fine but Windows explorer does
not. All my startup programs (those not in the startup
group) activate when booting up but none show up on the
task bar. I know they are working because using the task
manager I can see them. No link - LNK - works. None in the
program files. They all are assigned to one program, which
I can change readily in Tools/Folder options to another
registered program. Went on the net and found one place
that gave instructions but I had to use regedit, which I
can't! Booted from my CD and used recover/repair option.
It reinstalled a whole bunch of files but did nothing to
fix the problem. All I did was loose all the fixes that
came afte the cd was made. Any suggestions, like how to
link up my wife's laptop and use her regedit to access my
registry? Help, help!

Go to http://www.dougknox.com. Under Win XP fixes look for the file
association fixes.
