I am running XP.
I had 2 256mb ram cards total = 512mb ramb
This was working fine?
It appears I am now only running at 256mb ram.
Both cards are ok I have had them tested.
Is there a setting or something that controls max ram I can run?
Something I can fiddle with? Or is the motherboard duff?
Any help appreciated.

Give this a go.

If you swap each in and out do they both show
up as 256 mb or does one fail?

What is the make and model of your motherboard?

Hope this helps.

Try one at a time in different slots. Could be a RAM slot not working or
has a bad connection.

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the BOOT.INI tab.
Click on the "Advanced Options..." button and ensure that the checkbox
for the /MAXMEM= line is clear and that there is no value in the
databox for that line.

Good luck

With both in they show as 256mb.
With one out it shows as 256mb
With that one out and the other one in it shows 256mb.
This is regardless of which slot you use.
So it seems both cards are ok.
Both slots are ok.
It just that the motherboard only recognises one!
Not sure of motherboard make model will have to get the lid off, it's
an Aries PC from Watford Electronics.

As it happens my first home computer came from Watford.

You need to find out basic information about your motherboard
and memory. Sometimes you need to match memory. Have
you studied the motherboard manual? Did you buy the extra
memory from Watford?

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information
about your computer:

With both in, does the BIOS recognize the RAM?

The configuration is the same as I bought from Watford, I have never
taken the lid off the machine before. It worked happily for two years
then this just happened.

Motherboard Properties:
Motherboard ID
10/03/2003-nVidia-nForce-6A61BM4FC-00
Motherboard Name
MSI K7N2GM-L (MS-6777)
Memory Bus Properties:
Bus Type DDR SDRAM
Bus Width 64-bit
Real Clock 167 MHz (DDR)
Effective Clock 333 MHz
Bandwidth 2666 MB/s

With both Ram cards in the BIOS recognizes 256mb it seems. Though
delving into the BIOS is a bit off-piste for me I have to admit.
Though it did remind me of my Commodore 64 days.

Seems you need to replace your motherboard. I would contact the computer
manufacturer for one, if I were you.

Alias thanks for your help.
I am familiar with computers but a bit of a novice under the lid so to
speak. I can take the lid of any point to key components, etc. How
difficult do you rate the task of replacing the motherboard? Is it a
straight swap or is the fiddling to be done?

(I remember sticking paper clips in the rear of my Commodore 64 so I
could break into games)

Thanks again.

The motherboard will come with instructions on how to install it. If
it's the same as the one you have, you might want to take a photo of the
old one so you know which wire/cable goes where. Or, pay someone to put
it together for you. You will have to clean install your OS and all your
programs/devices once you're done so be sure to do a back up of your
data before proceeding.

I suspect this motherboard was discontinued over 2 years ago.

I think our friend should ask Watford Technical Support for advice.
If as you suggest the motherboard is faulty it could be more economic
to buy a new computer.

Huh? MBs start at 35 US dollars. You can get a computer for that?
