Loss of red color in monitor

M

Molly

I am not sure if this is an XP problem or not, but it
began about a week ago, and I never encountered this
problem while running Win98.

For no apparent reason, my monitor is no longer
displaying the red color. The red is missing from the
whole screen, not just patches here and there, and every
once in a while the colors will display properly for a
few minutes, so I know that the red is not burnt out, but
invariably the red channel will disappear again. I have
tried to degausse from the monitor control panel, and
while it does not affect the final result, I can see the
red in the spectrum as the colors spin.

I have a Dell GX1 and a ViewSonic PF790. As far as I can
tell, the driver for the video card (ATI Rage Pro) is up-
to-date, as the manfacturer's website indicates that the
necessary drivers for XP are included on the XP
installation disks. I also updated my BIOS this morning,
and it has not made a difference (at least with this
problem). About a month ago I updated the ViewSonic
driver as well after upgrading to XP.

I have also checked the cable connections between the CPU
and monitor and cannot find any obvious defect.

I have no idea what would have started this display
problem. My husband and I had both been using the
computer without any problem in the morning, and I came
to check something and woke the monitor up from its sleep
state and noticed the red was missing. The CPU itself
would have been in screensaver mode had the monitor not
turned itself off due to the Energy star shut-off
function.

As I am fairly confident that it is not an actual monitor
problem, I am guessing that XP is the culprit. We have
been running XP on this computer for about two months and
are still tweaking things here and there.

Restarts have had no effect, and we have been on vacation
from the day after this problem began until yesterday,
and the computer was shut down while we were away. To my
knowledge there have not been any power surges or the
like.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Same problem

I'm currently having the same problem, and I know it's not my moniter because I have plugged my computer into my TV and it does the same thing. My cord also seems to be fine, so I'm assuming it's a Video Card problem.

I have a Labtop and am using a Dual Moniter setup. I only have the color issue on my secondary moniter (so I assume it's not the OS) and was wondering if there is any fix (other then buying a new video card) for solving this problem.

And yes, I have updated my drivers, used a diffrent cord, used a diffrent moniter, and cursed wildly. None of these seem to solve the problem, even if I feel better afterwards.
