Losing my (Internet) connection...

Hi

When I leave my computer unattended, it drops the internet connection and I have to reboot to restore the connection

I have a Dell Dimension with 1Gb Ram and a Dell Truemobile 2300 wireless router. My wife's computer is connected via the wireless connection to the router, and she is NOT losing connection to the internet. So that pretty much rules out the Surfboard SB4100 cable modem and probably the router

What usually happens is that I will be away from the computer for a while ( 1 hour, 3 hours, 8 hours - whatever) and when I return, the connection is dropped. If I try to check mail with Outlook Express, I get the following error

A TCP/IP error occurred while trying to connect to the server. Account: 'pop.charter.net', Server: 'pop.charter.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC1

If I try to use Explorer, it can't find any of the pages I am looking for. The cable modem is all lit up nice and pretty, and the router is all lit up nice and pretty. But I'm not on the internet

I am running XP Pro Service Pack 1

I have tried running IPCONFIG /release and /renew to no avail

Only a reboot will restore the connection

Any help is greatly appreciated

It could be a inactivity timeout
i.e: You leave your computer for a certain amount of time and it drops your
connection due to inactivity

The first thing is to swap a patch cable for the one you are using.
This kind of disconnection might be due to a failing cable/connector.
The nic is probably set to autodetect and connecting at 100Mb/s, but the
cable will not support that speed. Alternatively, reset the nic for
10Mb/s and see if that helps. If so, it is the cable. Also, try
changing ports on the router. Individual ports are known to fail.
