losing 1394 adapter and network bridge

After installing Vista, it took out my 1394 network adapter and also the
network bridge so I lose internet connectivity immediately. It says the
device won't work until I get an updated driver from the manufacturer. In
the properties of the 1394 adapter, it says the manufacturer is Microsoft.

I have an Alienware with an Intel Pro 1000 network adapter. That adapter
works fine and I can connect to my home network, I just can't seem to see the
internet after Vista.

This happesns whether I do a clean install or an upgrade to XP Pro with a
working internet connection.

Actually, that wasn't the problem at all.

In researching this further, it appears to be a common problem with newer
routers that have SPI enabled by default. Mine is a D-link DGL 4100 gigabit
gaming router. I had to go in and disable SPI in the firewall settings and
now its mostly good. Now it only suffers from another common ailment, slow
networking. Haven't figured that one out yet but I see there are plenty of
posts about it.
