Just got this new computer from Dell several weeks ago, and I notice that
after setting my desktop appearance settings to "classic" the setting will
revert back to XP theme, periodically after rebooting. Dell wants me to use
their resintall program to return to the default Dell setup, but I already
have all of my programs and crap saved. Any other fixes for this?

It's unfortunate that I do not have a fix for this, only the same problem. A
new Dell computer that wont keep the theme setting after Reboot. I've tried
to go back to the Dell Factory Setup, only as soon as I un-install Norton AV
so I can install my own or any of the default ISP programs I get this bug.
Anyone know this can be fixed? Really anoying as my cheap computer never had
this issue/bug.

Try MVP Kelly Theriot's fix:

thanks for the link. I will try this when I get home and see what it does.
I did notice that my computer at work doesn't even have this registry key yet
has no issues. You would think all computer O/S's would be equal. What
makes it worse is when your one of only a handful of people with this issue
so most people dont know what it is.

Sorry, an addition to my problem. When you go into the display properties it
shows you are using Classic themes, and the background stays the same as the
classic. Only the windows and taskbars revert to XP Luna after reboot. Don
know if this info helps or not.

Simple, the difference is the computer at work hasn't been configured
ofr mis-configured the way your system at home has.

Well, I really hope this works. You would think the more money you pay for a
computer would mean less hassle. I would be perfectly happy if they included
no extra software and let me get on with it. This is my fourth Xp computer
and the most expensive. All the others had no issues what so ever. Even if
it doesn't work I have to thank everyone that helped me out. When I spoke to
the Dell tech support they told me that a theme only changed the background
and not the taskbar and windows.

More money = less hassle? Humm, NOT! It depends on WHAT you spent the
money to BUY! If you spent the money on better hardware(less problems),
or you spent the money on a bunch of addon software(more problems), or
in home setup and configuration(less problems). Since the issue is the
pre-installed stuff that you are attempting to remove, I'd say you are
in the "addon software" group and there is where the monsters are :-)
Hope the suggestions the folks give you work and you might want to
bookmark Kelly's site.

Well, the save settings didnt work, so I called Dell back up. They are
sending me disks out to do a clean install. Hopefully this will work.

Again, thanks for all of your help. You guys are more help than Dell could
ever be!

try to check your profile, there is a file ntuser.dat what extention does it
have is it *.dat or *.man?
needs to be *.dat

I'm at work now, but as soon as I can I'll check that out. After applying a
few registry tweaks it sort of works. By sort of I mean when it boots up it
shows the default Luna theme, but after about 10 seconds it starts to jerk
and move and leaves me with the classic theme. I can still tell something
isn't right about it though.
Dell are going to overnight the install disks to me to do a clean install.
I'm 99.9% certain it's not harware thats causing this so it must be some
software Dell has put on that is causing it. As a side note, I found out it
does this without uninstalling or changing anything. If I reset back to
factory settings and then apply the classic theme it still reverts to Luna
XP, even if all of the settings are unchecked and visualisations are down to
a minimum.

Well, the ntuser files are all *.DAT guess a fresh install is in order.
Thanks again for your help

I got my problem sorted. I restored back to factory settings with only my
keyboard and mouse attached. After windows had loaded I added the devices
back one at a time. Seems to have solved my issue.

Thanks again for everyones help!
