This has driven me nuts. I have 3 computers and 2 printers and 1 dsl router.
I want to put them on a network with 1 printer on the network and 1 shared
through a pc usb. I have followed the wizard to the letter, I have had
friends who do this for a living give me advice and I have read a book on
setting this up.

When I go to 'My Network Places' and then click'View Workgroup Computers',
on 2 of the pc's I can see the name of the network and the name of the other
computers but when I click on them I get an error saying 'NAME COMPUTER is
not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator............' . On the other remaining computer, a
laptop, I can only see the name of the network. When I click on this I get a
similar error 'NAME NETWORK is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator............'

I have tried every troubleshoot link, re done the wizard countless times but
all to no avail.

Is the problem the router? Who is the administrator? Why doesn't this work?

Thanks a million.

This is a .00001 percenter... but are you using VPN?

My experience is that when a VPN connection is running, the local connections
are not available.

The router is not involved in this other than a physical connection
between all of the computers.

Have you turned off all firewalls ? This includes the built-in firewall
and any third party firewalls. (To be turned back on.....after you get
this working.)

I assume each PC has Print/File Sharing enabled. Enabled 'Simple File
Sharing' ? And, have you shared anything on the PC's ?

You have double-checked that all of the PC's have the same workgroup name
?

Does each PC have every user added to it that may want to access the
network resource ? If the username/password is Frank/letmein on PC1, in
order to easily use shared resources, each other PC should have a
Frank/letmein user also.

have you set up the SAME usernames on all machines, with the SAME passwords,
and the SAME access rights? A peer-to-peer network such as yours keeps all
the information on who is entitled to access each machine, on each machine,
therefore you have to tell each machine who is entitled to access it....

Hi Pete

No I do not believe I am using a VPN, it certainly wasn't actively set up.

Thanks for the reply.

Hi Dan

I had done everything you suggest other than set us all up as user account
on each pc, I have just done this but unfortunately no joy, thanks for the
response.

Cri

Hi both yourself and Dan have given similar advice so this is maybe where I
fall down. I have just added my user name to my wifes pc and vice versa. I
added a new account, same user name and password and have both set up as
administrators rather than limited accounts. Is this what you suggest or
should I go further?

Thanks

Cri

Looks like you and I have the same problem. Nothing anyone tells me works.
I have turned off firewalls, I have checked and rechecked everything till I
am crazy! This feature used to work with all of my same equipment before,
except I have a different modem. I can access the internet from both, but my
home networking does not work. I get the exact same message that you are
getting.

Good luck

I just got my problem solved. Here are the changes that worked for me:

1. I changed the Node Type from Peer to Peer to Broadcast (on both pc's)

2. Enabled Netbios of TCP/IP (on both PCs)

3. Activated the guest accounts on both pc's and made the my accounts the
same names on both pc's and sychronized all the passwords. (both pc's)

4. Set the restrictananymous to 0 on the laptop as the desktop was already 0

I used Regedit to do #4 and #1 above. I followed the articles from PCChucks
Blog. It is excellent--Thank the Lord for him!
