Lookups

I am trying (for the first time) to use
Lookup/Vlookup...Iwant to look in a range above my cell
for 1 or more "0"'s and return the value in the cell
immediately to its left. It seems from the instructions
that we can only retrieve values from the right!! Is this
correct??
