I have a data base with 2 fields, eg lastname of husband
and lastname of wife. When the lastname of husband is
entered, i would like the lastname of the wife to be auto
entered and changed only if the party is single.

Why not use a combo box to select the husband's last name? That avoids the
problem of people typing in a wrong name. Then you can use the technique
shown on The ACCESS Web to populate a textbox with the "wife's last name":
