Click on the Lookup tab in the table's Design View and remove the SQL.
Change the display control to a text box.

If you don't delete the rowsource, it stays there until after the database
is compacted. If you change the field back to combo box, even after it's
saved, the rowsource will return. It is as if Access doen't believe you when
you say you want to get rid of the lookup field. I prefer to delete the
rowsource, so that I know it's gone for good.
