looking to extract a video image from a dvd to mov avi or mpg format ?

my daughter's ballet recital was a month a go and i just recieved the
dvd with her classes' performance on it. what i would like is to
extract this porttion from the dvd and convert it to mpg, avi, or even
mov format so that i can email it. its about 3-4 minutes long. any
suggestions?:

It doesn't work for me.
I can see the movie.
And the cursor go to the end...
I can't select anything.
