Looking for MD5/SFV creator with recursion and specific file creationoptions

Hi all,

Before burning any large collection of files to CD I create MD5
checksums for each file on the CD. I prefer to have a single text file
in each directory containing the MD5 sum of all of the files in that
directory only - it makes checking much quicker if I only want to copy a
small folder full of files off of a DVD and is more convenient than
having to go through selecting individual files to check against one
huge file storing the checksums for a whole DVD.

I have found plenty of SFV/MD5 creators that will recursively scan a
directory tree and create a checksum file, but they all seem to create a
single file in the root directory of the tree rather than individual
files for each directory. Can anyone point me at a decent SFV/MD5
creator which creates individual files for each directory without
manually creating them, preferably with shell integration for creation
and checking?

At the moment I am using hkSFV and very happy with it in all other
respects but it would be nice if I could find something with involving a
bit less clicking!

Cheers,

B

sorry for OT, but to do what you want is only one of all the great
features of "Total Commander" (payware).

Hi Ben,

I have been looking for something like this for a while now without
success however I did come across FastSum (http://www.fastsum.com/)
which is very fast but is not freeware.

Hopefully, someone will come up with a suggestion.

Thanks for that... I have just discovered something I overlooked in one
of the apps I'd tested previously - cSFV actually will do exactly what
I/we want but only for SFV files.

It does seem a slower than hkSFV, but if it saves me time overall by not
going through a whole directory tree manually right clicking on all the
folders, it looks like I have a partial winner :)

Just right click on the root folder of your directory and choose "Create
SFV in Folder" and answer Yes to "Create SFV-Files for Sub-Folders as
well". An individual SFV file for all files in each folder - bingo!

I know that in theory an SFV checksum will be just as good as an MD5,
but I'm still open to suggestions if anyone has a tool that will do the
same for MD5, or has an opinion on any tool with fast(er?) SFV creation.

Some days ago I came across SmartMD5 which might be the right program
for your needs. I only had a quick glance into it, though. The homepage
can be found here:

www.byza.it/main.php?pagemain=md5

On its first start the program shows an About screen. Later on this
screen doesn't pop up anymore.

Thanks for that! I now have a few leads to follow - sadly haven't found
anything with shell integration and MD5 creation yet, but if I only need
to locate the root folder instead of manually finding them all in
Windows Explorer, I guess it doesn't matter too much.

First impressions of SmartMD5 are that it is fairly slow compared to
other MD5 creation tools (seems about 1/2 to 2/3 the speed of hkSFV) but
again, if it saves me time overall by not having to go through every
directory, it's probably a net gain.

Cheers!

Will any of these do what you're looking for? Some are console tools that
must be run from the cmd prompt. Some are Windows tools.
