I got a Dell computer running Windows 2000 Professional. When I try to
Update the system (run the Recover CD), it fails and now it is deadlocked:

when it does "Perfoming Final Tasks" during the update, after it finishes

Installs Start menu items

and runs about half way of

Registers components

it stucks there. If I reboot the computer, it restarts the update, then goes
to the above point and stucks. I tried all the ways available to start the
windows (choices given after I press F8 during boot up), it always goes to
restart the update.

How can I fix it, without wiping out my stuff to install a new system?
Thanks very much for any help!

Update and Recover are two very different operations. Updating should be
done with an update CD or with WindowsUpdate.com not a Recover CD. This
could be the source of the problem. When you boot up, why not take the CD
out and update your system another way.

Stanley,

That's the only recovering CD came with my Dell computer. The CD labeled as
'Recover CD'. When you run it, you have three options:

1. Update (that's why I said update in my question. I guess it means
repairs damaged files);

2. Install (wipe out everything, reformat);

3. Browse files.

Since now it got stucked in 1, 2 and 3 are not even available to me.

BTW, I forgot to mention that I touched registry before all this happened: I
added an entry: VDD. And before doing that, I deleted and re-created the
parent entry of VDD. I did all of that by following an VDD error message, and
related information I found.
