Looking for a search&copy tool

O

Outlaw

Hi,
I am looking for a tool for the following:
I have a directory with lots of subdirectories. In these subdirs there are a
lot of files (13000+).
Now i am looking for a copy of some of these files and place a copy the
found files in another folder somewhere on the pc.
If possible, i want to enter multiple files, click op "go" and the tool
should find all files and copy these files to the specified folder.

Anyone?

Cheers

May be a two step process.

1. Locate files and get into a list or lists
Might even be done with dir command redirected.
2. feed that list into another program - possibly xxcopy

You want to click on each one of a few thousand files? You want to
clicl on the folders and have the files in them copies, including
subdirectories? You'll have to be a little more definite about
exactly what you want to do.

I don't see any particular problem there. Any search tool can scan a dir
plus subs and list the results. Then it should let you copy the results to
some destination folder.

If, however, you want to reproduce the original folder structure (ie the
found items relative position) in the destination folder, then you should
take a look at so-called "Rich Copy" in XYplorer (http://www.xyplorer.com).

Ok, A little more specific then.

Let's say i have an email. In this email the filenames are listed like:
file1.jpg
file2.jpg
file3.jpg
etc

I want to be able to copy this list and past it into a tool. This tool
should know that it should look in "e:\pictures" and all the subirectories
below. After finding each specific file, the tool should copy that one file
to a given folder.
After the copy, the folder specified should contain all the files that i had
in he list. The treestructure should not be copied.

I hope this is more specific?

If all you care about are pictures. You might want to explore Picasa from
Google.
It will find all the the pictures on your drive and build an index to them. It
is free.

Hi lou,
Picassa looks nice, but i still have to look for every picture one by one
(now in onnce screen, ok).
But the trouble is that sometimes i have to find 1 or 2 picturen, and
sometimen 10, 20, 50 or even more. That's the part i am looking to automate
:).

Might you be able to use some sort of macro-automation app to
repetitively copy-paste and move? One I can think of is Piky Basket
[freeware]:

http://www.conceptworld.com/piky/piky_features.asp

Here's the site's description of this util:

"Piky Basket is created to save your time and effort when working with
files and folders in Windows. Piky Basket comes with the following 3
cool features.
First Cool Feature: Copy, Copy, Copy, Paste.

With Piky Basket, you can reduce repetitive tasks when copying/moving
files and folders in Windows. Piky Basket allows you to select
files/folders in to a "basket" from different locations. Once you are
done selecting, you can paste them all at once to the target folders.
It also allows you to selectively paste the files to the target folder.

Piky Basket is integrated with Windows Explorer. You do not have to run
Piky Basket as a separate program. It can be accessed from the menu
which appears by right clicking on any files/folders in Windows
Explorer.

Piky Basket is a replacement for Windows file copy/paste operation

Piky Basket can save lot of time when organizing files on your hard
drive

Piky Basket can be very useful when copying same set of files to
different locations

Piky Basket can be used when taking backup of files and folders from
different locations

Piky Basket can be used when burning a CD which requires copying of
files and folders from different location "

Just a suggestion. Don't know if it'll suit your needs.

Will all the files be in the same directory tree every time? If so,
try Karen's Replicator
<http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp>. You can set
it to copy all files of a type, or many types, from one directory tree
to another.
