I have tried to take a screen shot of a video on the desktop and all I get
is a black area. Is there a program that will do this - the PrintScr key is
useless for what I want?

Try Prinkkey 2000, v5.10. Works for me.

Screen Master

Screenmaster is a tool for capturing both snapshots and video
information from your screen. It allows you to capture from the whole
screen a specific window, or a user-defined region. Screen master
supports WMV video format and most major picture formats such as JPG,
GIF, BMP, PNG, ICON, EMF, EXIF, and PNQ. Hotkeys are supported to
simplify and speed up screen capture

Taking a ScreenShot of a Video in Windows Media Player
When you want to take a few screenshots from a movie clip in Windows
Media Player, press Print+Screen, paste it in an image editing program,
and you get a black screen. The reason for this is due to Hardware
Acceleration being enabled. But you can turn this feature off.

In Windows Media Player, go to Tools > Options > "Performance" tab.
Move the Hardware Acceleration Slider to None.

Ctrl+I and save the image at the prompt.

Wouldn't you be able to open the file in Windows Movie Maker (assuming
you have WinXP) and take a still shot?

This might help.

Don't waste time going there. It is a

http://www.donationcoder.com/index.html

program. One has to constantly re-register the programs downloaded
there.

Unless one makes a "donation". A different type of shareware concept.

Apart from being nagware one can also end up getting repeated emails
asking for donations.

Is there a chance that we could put a "warning" about these people on
the PL pages please ? Otherwise many people wanting "freeware" could
be suckered in.

Regards, John.

I'll note the apps that are time-limited/ require registration keys/
re-registration if they're listed on the ACF program info pages. May not
get to that till after the PL2006 CD is put to bed.

If failure to fully disclose all the conditions/limitations was grounds
for a "warning" I'd have to create a whole set of web pages just for
warnings. The first example that springs to mind: IIRC when 40tude
Dialog was time-limited for quite a while it was difficult/impossible to
find that information on the author's site.

I have a version that was downloaded prior to the registration requirement
and will happily upload it to alt.binaries.freeware later today.
