Looking for a good on demand virus scanner

Looking for a good on demand virus scanner. It does not need all the
bells and whistles such as e-mail scanner, etc.

I just want something to scan my system WHEN I WANT TO.

I tryed the paid route of AVG but it kept my Office tool bar from
load, would not let me run REGEDIT, would not let the icon for
Netscape show, among other thing.

So as I said i am looking for a good on demand virus scannerto scan my
system when I want it too. It does not need all the bells and
whistles such as e-mail scanner, etc.

TIA

If you have the discipline to ALWAYS check mail attachments and
downloads manually, F-Prot for DOS is all you need even on
Win2K/Winxp. You can add the function to check files and folders from
the mouse context menu by adding a link to your Sendto directory. If
you want to see the results of a normal scan, right-click on the
shortcut and uncheck the "close on exit" box.

Manual updates are here:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/updates/f-prot/
Macro:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/updates/f-prot/dos/

Simply download sign.def, sign2.def and update.ini and copy them into
the F-Prot directory. The same goes for macro.def. It only takes a
minute to do and the files are updated almost daily.

http://www.f-prot.com runs in a DOS window. Works well on win98se. I
don't know if/how it runs on XP.

In addition to F-Prot, take a look at antidote or BitDefender.

Are you looking for on-demand disk scans or on-demand file or folder
scans (which I typically do via right-click menu)? Are you
comfortable adding your own menu entries?

Other full featured possibilities:
avast!
AntiVir
(AVG has not faired well this year in several detection comparisons)
