looking for a good nk2 editor...

....but NOT Ingressor.

I've used Ingressor before. It's okay but has some very annoying flaws. The
worst one is that ever since I bought it I've had trouble with my license.
Randy gave me new keys a year or 2 ago but then today I couldn't run it
again. It thinks it's in demo mode and wants me to register it. When I did
that it told me that I'd exceeded licensed copies or something which is nuts
because nothing's changed on this machien since I first installed it a
couple of years ago. His copy protection security is far too paranoid and it
makes for a very unhappy customer IMO.

I'd like to find something else that I can edit the NK2 file with that works
well and doesn't have poorly designed licensing restrictions that get in the
way.

I'm currently using O2003.

Thanks,

Keith

Lets you view.
Lets you delete.
Don't see where you can edit (but then just enter it again to add to cache).

Personally I haven't needed it. The drop-down listbox showing the cache
when entering values in the To/Cc fields shows me what is there for any
starting character that I enter. Deleting is as easy as highlighting the
selection and hitting Del. Editing is as easy as simply entering anew the
deleted entry. However, I don't bother keeping thousands of entries cached
in the .nk2 file. In fact, the time it takes me to type in the rest of the
e-mail address isn't too much longer than having to select from a list, and
I know what I'm entering is correct versus a cached entry that might be old
or was wrong.

I believe that it only holds the last 1000 names used.

Thanks Dianne. I didn't know about debunk2 or nk2.info. But I want to edit
and those don't allow for that. nk2view says you can edit so I tried it out
a few days ago after VanguardLH showed it to me. But I'll be darned if I can
edit with it. I can view, delete and export, but not edit. I think they
mislead us on this. I'm guessing that you have to export, edit the exported
file, then import and that's why they say you can edit with it. Ingressor
lets you do it all rigth from there. I like Ingressor in that it does what
it says it does but it's got a few really weird quirks. And like I said
before, his licensing is so strict (which as a developer myself I do
understand but not to this degree) that any little thing throws your license
out the window. It's very annoying to deal with.

I understand the licensing annoyances - there are a few apps I made the
mistake of licensing and it's a real hassle when you reformat or get a new
computer.

Honestly, I think editing the NK2 is highly overrated. Use the utility to
export the NK2 to a file so you can import it into contacts. Delete the
addresses that are wrong as they come up, use autoresolution for the others.

I agree. It can be handy but I don't edit it much. I used to. I *hate* that
Outlook sometimes puts quotes around the display names. Nobody's been able
to adequately rationalize that one for me. IMO it really fouls things up but
good and makes the whole point of the NK2 file moot. I used to use Ingressor
to take them out until I discovered that it was a complete waste of time
playing cat and mouse with Outlook's twisted desires.

Exactly - outlook is always going to win. :) Most people who edit them do so
for similar reasons - usually to change the display name. It's a waste of
effort.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that with Outlook 2007 it was increased to
2,000.

You can't edit with that tool, but there's no reason why you'd need to, since
it's so easy to add entries. You edit an entry by deleting it and adding a
correct one.

I understand but I don't agree (no offence intended). It's nice to be able
to go over the whole list at ocne and edit them as needed. I did that a few
times when I first got ingressor. I opened up my NK2 and spent about an hour
deleting old entries and editing a few to make the emails correct. It was
pretty handy. It's a lot quicker than deleting and adding one at a time the
other way. Nice to do it from one big list. Easier to catch mistakes that
way.
