Looking for a free virus checker and firewall program

AVG requires a pretty high end machine to run...but it's OK

I have most features with avg used and with a fairly new computer
nothing seems to slow down. I have 3 gigs of ram. Think I may try
something different than avg for xp next install. Will try Avast
 
AVG likely for the virus checker. Firewall?

I used outpost free in the past. It was not updated for years, but
still trusted it the entire time.

There is a new version though. I liked it. For firewall, a router is
all you 'may' need.
