I remember someone mentioning a freeware program that helps cool the cpu.

Is my memory failing me or is there such a beast?

Thanks in advance,

Dave H.

Depends on the CPU and the operating system...

NT-Based Windows should not require HALT initiation assistance, but
there are still some tricks.

This one supports multiplier/voltage control on a range of more recent
CPU's, and clock modulation on some others.

One for older AMD processors with "STOP GRANT" - just watch the
stability, as many systems are unable to handle this reliably.

For older Socket 7 CPUs...

Some info on older coolers, including RAIN - I ran RAIN with a Cyrix
for a long time.

Hi Dave. A good heat sink and fan is, without a doubt the best
way to keep your CPU cool. If software does exist, it could only
control fan speed (a variable fan).

There are lots of these, currently I run S2KCTRL with my Athlon XP 2800+
others that come to mind are VCool, CPUCool, Amn Refrigerator, CPUIdle,
CPU Eat 'n' Cool.
Basically most of these simply issue a HLT instruction to the CPU which
2k & XP do anyway. However if you are running an Athlon this is not
enough and the bus needs to be disconnected for the HLT instruction to
work IIRC hence the need for this software with Athlons.

Do a google for CPU software cooling or HLT and you should find
something. This site should get you started although its a bit out of
date: http://www.free-ftp.org/coolingsoftware/

After trying many over the years on my 98 machine including rain, amn
refrigerator and the paid for cpuidle (which correctly showed cpu usage..
the others didnt) , ive come to the conclusion that youd be wasting your
money.Yes they lower the temperature but your cpu is more than likely
robustly built and can take it anyway. Also you are more likely to change
your computer by the time any remotley overheating damage is done to the
cpu , and finally they interfere with sites like pcpitstop that benchmark
your system by showing 100% cpu utilization. If the heat is that bad then
a fan would be better value.

Of course it may still be useful to save battery life on a notebook.
Seems to help my brother on Win98.

S2kctrl is also called Athlon CPU Software Cooler from Twinsoft. Supports
AMD cpu's on most if not all chipsets. VCool is also excellent but does
ot support as many chipsets. I currently use VCool and find it quite
worthwhile, dropping idle temps as much as 10 C. But when I upgrade my
mainboard to a more recent board, I will switch to S2kctrl.

One link for S2kctrl is
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Athlon_CPU_SoftCooler_d4216.html

A link for VCool is
http://vcool.occludo.net/
Here you will want 1.8beta10. It is quite stable and the author does not
seem to have the desire to update it further or run it on new chipsets.
He has an alph version for newer chipsets, but this is not complete enough
to be useful.

Hope this helps someone.
