How can I look behind the splash screen when Windows 2K boots? In windows
95/98 I could hit the ESC key.

Is there a similar option in Windows 2K?

I upgraded my HP Pavillion to windows 2000 from 98SE and it seems to take a
very long time to load past this screen. the "bar" at the bottom of the logo
screen gets to about the half way point and then the hard drive, etc stops
for a minute or two before continuing. The program is still running, since
the rotating/scrolling bar above is moving the entire time. I have two other
PC's using windows 2000 and they do not pause like this.

I use to have Nortons Antivirus installed, and I think it's hanging up
(maybe still running some kind of system check) at bootup. But it could be
something else.

I've used some public domain registry "cleanup" programs, but they have not
helped.

F8 at startup and try 'Safe Mode' and or 'Enable boot logging' Registry
cleaners, as a general rule, do more damage than good.

But, in safe mode, it still shows the "windows 2000" screen. And boot
logging will show what is been run, but it will not help me actually
determine time wise what is the culprit, correct ?
