'Look in' or 'Attach File(s)' dialog boxes hanging

Howdy-

Has anyone come across a solution to the problem when users go to the
'Look in' dialog box (sometime from Office, can be any app - Notepad,
Paint, etc.) from say, File-Open and then click on the drop-down and get
very long wait periods - basically system hangs? This can be seen from
a variety of applications (Office, MSFT, Thunderbird, etc.) using
similar dialog boxes and the wait times all being greater than a minute?

These are stable, corporate-imaged XP Pro SP1 on machines with decent
specs...

sorry - post to wrong group; just realized this was win2000 and not winxp...
