I am interested in beta testing Windows Longhorn, is there a way to be
included in the testing program?..

Bruce,

The beta for Windows Code Name "Longhorn" is still a way off.

The first builds (pre betas) will be provided to the developers attending
the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference 2003

Hi

Try the following link:

Hello Mike,
I would like to know whether you know how I can obtain a copy of a
Microsoft Longhorn Beta as I am a VB.NET Programmer, and in my
reference guide, they ask me to open my longhorn browser, and I'm like
"Yes... how can I do that without Longhorn?".
Thanks!

Longhorn isn't in beta yet - in fact, the bits that they handed out at the
PDC were considered alpha or pre-alpha.

If you have an MSDN subscription, you can request that the PDC bits for
Longhorn and Whidbey be set to you. If not, you may be out of luck - there
don't appear to be any plans to make this release more widely available at
this time.

You may want to check microsoft.public.msdn.general for more information.

Oh I see. I also want to ask you that there are downloads of the
internet for Longhorn, and even some of my friends have obtained a
version (possibly illegally), although I want to know whether I can
obtain a LEGAL version.
So wouldn't that mean that Longhorn has been bundled already? As in
the 5049 release, and the beta 1? I need to use it for my course ::
VB.NET, as they refer to using the Longhorn Browser, which is really
wierd!!!
Thanks.

Windows "Longhorn" is available to the PDC attendees and to the developers
under the MSDN program
It is NOT in Beta yet and will not be for some time.
There is certainly no courseware requiring a product that is at such an
earlier stage of development.

If your friends downloaded a copy of Longhorn from the internet, it is
almost certainly illegal. You would only be able to legally obtain a copy
of Longhorn if you attended PDC, or if you have an MSDN subscription and
request the PDC bits.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'bundled,' but if you are referring to the
fact that there's a setup process for it, that's nothing new. The setup
process is part of the product, which is part of the development cycle.
It's there from the first build to the last.

As Mike B. said, Longhorn is certainly not in Beta yet (and there is no
build 5049 to my knowledge - the PDC build was 4051). There's absolutely no
reason why any course you may be taking would require you to use Longhorn at
this stage. You may want to verify that, and if it is what they're asking
for, find out why...
