long time to log on

Hi,

I have a client that I'm trying to change from logging in to a workgroup
to logging on to a domain/ When the client logs in to the workgroup there's
no problem but when I have the client join a domain and then after a
re-boot, I try to log on, it takes at least 5-10 minutes before the desktop
appears. When I finally do get to the desktop and try to add (for example) a
domain user to the local administrators group it doesn't recognize the user.

I did notice that the "computer" was added tot he domain and again the
user does finally log in, but the length of time and the fact that I can't
add a domain user to the administrators group definitely tells me there's
something wrong. This has happened to 2 machines, one of them being a brand
new machine with a clean Windows XP Professional OS installed.

Any thoughts ??

Thanks Steve

It sounds like you've got your dns set incorrectly on the workstations.
The DNS server should look to itself for its dns with forwarding zones
set and a separate gateway to the Internet set (if appropriate).
Workstations should look to the server for dns with separate Internet
gateway set (if appropriate).
