Logon Sound won't turn off

I am currently getting a four-note, full orchestra, logon sound when I log in
to Windows XP Professional, even though I have Logon, Logoff, Start, and
Shutdown sounds set to "none" in the control panel. The particular sound
that plays does not correspond to any of the wave files offered in the sounds
list in control panel. Has anyone run into this, and if so, do you know how
to turn it off?

Thanks,
Bob Reader

Hey Bob,

Just as a test, can you turn off all sounds by selecting the "No Sounds"
scheme?

Does that sound still occur?

Try running MSCONFIG and disabling any 3rd party services that startup.

We try to see if one of those services are running this sound.

Also, you could try a search on all .WAV files; check for any sound files
that are not below C:\windows.

I did several things to pin this problem down.

First, I did a search for all *.wav files on my hard drive. I played every
file found, and none of them matched the sound I am hearing at logon. Thus,
the sound must not be in a WAV file.

By the way, I am almost certain this is a Microsoft sound, since it sounds
like the same orchestra and styling of the "Windows XP Startup.wav" and
"Windows XP Shutdown.wav", except that it is a different melody.

Second, I disabled things:

1) I went into msconfig and disabled every item found in the Startup tab.

2) I went into the Services tab and disabled every item except for:
Windows Audio
Cryptographic Services
Logical Disk Manager
Event Log
Plug and Play
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Restore Service
Windows Management Instrumentation
Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions

3) I went into Sounds and Audio and set the Sound Scheme to "No Sounds".

I then rebooted, and when I logged in, the pesky logon sound still played
loud and clear.

By the way, I am runningVirtual PC on this machine, and I am running some
bare-bones configurations of Windows XP Professional in some virtual
machines, and I get the same logon sound when I restart them.

Any other ideas? I recorded the sound on a cheap cassette recorder and made
a WAV file out of it, and I could send it to you if it would help you
identify it. I really think this is a Microsoft sound.

Thanks,
Bob

Hey Bob,

Try using the Windows Search feature and select MUSIC only; search all
drives.

This will may bring up a lot of hits, but you maybe able to narrow down the
location.

Or you can just do a search on .WMA or .WM or .WMV (this is of course
assuming the file is a windows media format)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];316992

- Check out your STARTUP folder from ALL PROGRAMS

- In msconfig, on the 1st window, select SELECTIVE STARTUP and remove the
check from "Load Startup Items" (I'm not 100% sure if this is the same as
to what you did previously under the STARTUP tab.

Craig:

As you suggested:
I looked for windows media files (.wma, .wm, .wmv) and did not find the
sound.
I removed startup items by unchecking "Load Startup Items".
Neither of these worked.

Since I have tested this without any startup items or extraneous services
starting, we must conclude that this is a Windows operating system sound that
is being triggered by some kind of setup configuration. Again, it sounds
like a Windows trademark sound, and I could email my recording of it to you
if it would help you recognize it.

Hey Bob,

Can you try this, perhaps the sound is being executed via the registry?

Please follow these steps and let me know your results.

1. Click on START, then RUN

2. Type "regedit" without the qoutes and click OK

3. Navigate to the following registry key :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\SystemStart\.Current

- Do you see an entry there?
- is it a sound file? If so, what sound file is it?

From here, you can backup the registry, delete that entry for the sound
file and log off and log in again. Also, do a search on your registry for
that sound file to see if it is listed elsewhere.

Remember, we are only looking for the value of ".Current". Do not delete
".Default".

Craig:

I guess this is turning out to be a tough one.

I checked the registry where you suggested, and the .current key under both
the SystemStart and WindowsLogon keys has only the default value which is
empty string.

Do you want to hear what the sound is? Like I said, I recorded it. If you
could identify the filename it is normally associated with, I could search
for that on my computer.

Yea, this is a tricky one.

If it is a Microsoft process/service that is kicking off that sound, I am
not sure where else to look.

Hopefully another reader will see this post and toss in some ideas. I'll
keep checking this out.
