I run XP home, when I try to log on I get a Logon Message "The system cannot
log you on now because the Domain Desktop is not available"

My son ,who has been home alone whilst I have been on holiday tells me this
problem started about 3 days ago.

Any help/ advice would be much appreciated

Right Click My Network Places and see the Properties for the connection
there, your Son may be by coriousty try to see things and changed the Log On
to a Domain.

Another to look at is the Users Account in the Control Panel and you can
change the way the user log on check this and see the setting there.
Again is your computer is clean, Kids can adventure and get stuck and get
nasty suff, so scan for malwares and Viruses to be sure every thing clean.
HTH.

You're sure you're running XP Home Edition? XP Home cannot join
a domain.

Here's what Microsoft has to say about that error message,

The system cannot log you on now because the domain
<DomainName> is not available
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824302

If your son is sure that the message showed up 3 days ago, you
might want to run System Restore to a time before that message
appeared. Note: Before running System Restore, move any files
you have stored on your Desktop to your My Documents folder.

Good luck

Thanks for the help, unfortunatly I am still stuck.

I cannot get past the Logon Mesage unless I use safe mode (f 8) ,once there
I can access the internet and run applications.

Whilst in safe mode I have run all the standard protections ie Ad ware,Spy
boot and have removed a number of viruses.

System restore has been swithch off and I cannot switch it back on in in
safe mode,it can only been switched on in normal mode.

My son said that when the problem first occured he ran system restore and it
did not solve the problem.

The LAN connection is ok as I can connect in safe mode,I just cannot get
logon to normal mode.

The System is MS XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2

Any suggestions

Thanks for the help, unfortunatly it has not solved the problem.

I cannot logon in normal mode.I can however log on in safe mode and from
there I can connect to the internet and run applications.

I have run all the standard apllications ie Ad A ware ,Spy Catcher.

System restore has been turned off and I cannot restore it whilst in safe
mode.

My son said that he did a system restore when the problem first occured but
it did not solve the problem..

How can I log on in normal mode .

Thanks

First off, make sure you have all your important files backed
up before you do anything else.

Were you able to obtain the hotfix from Microsoft that's
mentioned in the article I referenced in my earlier response?
If so, what happened?

If the problem still exists, here's how I'd approach the
problem.

1. Use the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) to try
to pinpoint what process gets loaded in a normal startup that's
causing the problem. Since you can start the computer if Safe
Mode you can try the procedure outlined in this article.

Here's another web site you may find helpful.

2. Perform a repair installation.
