Logoff/shutdown won't...

Stupid problem, only appeared after downloading a bunch of hotfixes from
windowsupdate.

I've got a machine that won't log off/restart/shutdown if I select those
items from the Start|Shutdown menu. However, if I use the shutdown.exe
utility that's part of XP, then I can properly log off/restart/shutdown. If
I use them from the Start menu, the system doesn't react at all and a some
failure entry is added to the event log (just a rather generic "unable to
log off" log entry or something similar, I don't have that machine in front
of me right now).

I made shortcuts to shutdown.exe for all three options on my desktop, but
obviously I'd prefer to have the menu items working...any ideas?

Hello Homer,
Please excuse my "Off-Topic" reply.

Hi Jan. No problem, if it's in response to anything I've posted, then it's
not off-topic in my book. Especially if I still haven't resolved it. :)
I did not reply in *that* thread because I did not
think you would see my post (your eMail address,
the several weeks difference in time,
difficulties with your newsreader).

I have a habit of toggling Ctrl-H in OE to show replies to my messages, so
it would've been hard for me to miss anyway.
Although I am unable to resolve the issue,
here is some information which *may* be relevant.

Following is the bulk of that thread.

I appreciate your taking some time to look into this, however I don't quite
see the relevance. I'm not having any problem building tables or embedding
links into them, my basic problem is that link calling window.open() spawns
a new window, in which the Links toolbar keeps appearing even though IE is
set up not to show it. If I've missed something in the articles quoted
above, please let me know. Thanks.

Hello Homer,

The "Off-Topic" indicator was a courtesy to anybody
reading this thread.

I had previously perused the MSDN articles and while I
was trawling the "back issues" of posts in this newsgroup
I noticed the post where you mentioned

|str="<TABLE><TR><TD onclick='window.open
("..."http://www...</TABLE>"

Now "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing", the MSDN
articles and your "basic problem" are over my head, but I
had thought the info might be at least remotely relevant.

Oh well, no harm done.

Thank you for your time.

Jan

You are still working on that?)

:)

Just keeping an eye on the newsgroup once in a while to see if anyone ever
finds a solution, but no, I wouldn't exactly say I'm actively trying to sort
it out. :)

The table was being used strictly for layout purposes, the root of the
problem stems from window.open(). Taking the table tags out of the equation
still shows the problem, so I didn't see the relevance of your links. I
probably should have clarified this point in my posts.
Oh well, no harm done.

At least now I know some people still stumble upon my post. :-D
