login problem! DCPROMO Help --- windows 2000 AD

Hi all,

This is the second time it happens within a Month same server box.

I have set up a domain (dcpromo) and run it for a couple of days.

I needed to demot it.

After demoting it, nobody can login.... Invalid user name and password
error.... note that I am the domain admin and the all the users for some
reasons, should be able to access the server

Background, the last time it happened, I looked for different password
recovery utilities but none worked because there was no logical drive.
Solution was to reinstall the OS.

Any idea or solution will be appreciated.

When you run dcpromo to demote the DC you remove all user/domain
information. Is there another server in this domain?

There no other domain!
It was setup to be the only one from the beginning.

I was not asking if there was another domain. I was asking if there were
other servers on the same domain as the server you demoted from being a DC.

If you demote the only server on the domain there is no domain. The users
you set up on the DC will be removed when you run dcpromo. If your users
don't have a local login to their PC they can't log in to anything.

They can't log into the domain, running dcpromo removed the domain and the
central user database, they can't log into their local computer because they
don't have an account set up on the local computer.

Sounds like you moved from a domain to a workgroup, but you did not set up
the work group.
