If a domain allows three tries at logging in, does the counter reset after a
successful login, or will the next bad login lock the account? For example,
if I key my password incorrectly twice, then get it right the third time,
does the counter reset with my successful login or will it remain at two and
the next bad login cause the account to be locked?

Should reset but ask your systems admin for specific details on the policy.

If the domain is set to defaults, the password count is reset by the
successful login. However, ask your domain administrator is that is the
case for the domain in question.
