Logging in as an administrator

K

Kolja

I am the administrator of my computer, on which there is
only one user. Me.

In the control panel folder of "User Accounts" there is
only one account listed, and it has my name on it, under
which "Computer Administrator" is written.

I am using Windows XP Pro.

Now... how do I log as an administrator to delete the
history folder and index.dat as per the instuctions at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm.

Thank you.

If your user account has administrator privledges, create another
administrative user. To do this, RIGHT click My Computer on your desktop and
select <Manage> on the context menu--this will open the MMC (Microsoft
Management Console).

In the left pane, locate <User and Groups> and expand the folder--select
user and create a new user (just right click). After creating your new
user, just be sure to go to Groups afterwards, and place your new user in
the administrator group.

Log off and log on as your new user--then you can delete your index.dat
file, etc.

Good luck,

Todd

Kolja,
"but how do I place the new user in the aministrator groups"
Control Panel | User Accounts

If you created a "new user" [example] Kolja, you should now
have 2 users listed plus a Guest account. Just don't make Kolja
a "Limited User". Once you get access you can delete the needed
files. However it is a *very* bad idea to use the Administrator
account for general purposes. Use "Kolja" for that, reserve the
Administrator account ......
