Is there a way or a setting that each time something screws up I can see
what went on just prior to the shutdown/freezeup etc. I have several people
using this computer and I'm usually not here when something goes wrong.

Control panel >> classic view >> administrative tools >> event viewer

You might want to right click it and 'pin to start menu' for easy access.
