Log off hanging

When we choose logoff from the start menu we are asked to
switch users or logoff. Normally, we are then shown the
user accounts to re-log into. About half the time,
though, when we are not shown the account selection
screen. The screen turns black and is unresponsive. We
are forced to manually tuirn off the computer and then
turn it back on.

You have some program running in the background that is not exiting

And of course, as Standard Windows Operating Procedure, you should be
running a current (post-2002 version using updated definitions)
antivirus program.
