Locks up at updates and service pack 4 install

noticed that when I got to windows update it locks up
exactly when it hits 30 % detecting updates. So i tried
reinstalling service pack 4 and again it locks up exactly
at the same time. Also the automatic update when it runs
it locks the pc up. I disabled that feature. But how can I
fix this lock up issue?
