Locking some text in a cell

I'm trying to do a proposal template where I have boxes labeled name, phone,
etc. I'd like to make it easy to use. I think a table where I can tab around
to fill it in would be good. I can't think of a way to tab to a cell and be
able to edit it (fill it in) without the text I have in it disappearing. How
would I lock the label itself and leave the rest of the cell editable? Or is
a table not the way to go? I have Word 2007, but it probably should work for
2003 also. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What you are describing is a protected form. You can find links to a series
of tutorials by Dian Chapman on classic (legacy) forms at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm. These tools can
still be used in Word 2007, but you have to first enable the Developer tab
to get to these "legacy" controls (Developer | Controls | Legacy Tools). The
check box to enable the Developer tab is somewhere in the Office Button |
Word Options.

There are also new "content controls" in Word 2007. If you're the only
person who will be using the template (or if no user will be using an
earlier version of Word), you may want to explore these as well.

I think that's exactly what I need. It'll take me a while to figure it all
out, but looking at the form where I can tab from one field to the next is
perfect.
Thanks for your help (again). And so quick. You're great.
