Locking cells

I'm using Excel 2003 under Win XP SP3

Is it possible to lock some contiguous cells so they cannot be deleted
or changed but may still be moved elsewhere on the worksheet?

Ideally I'd like to copy individual cells from the protected block

I'm a beginner with Excel so please no fancy VB code

TIA

Possible yes but................

Only if the area to which they(it) are being pasted is an unlocked range.

After the locked cells are copied to the new area, they will have to be
re-locked at that area if you don't want the copied cells to be edited.

The originals will remain locked.

You will also have to allow locked cells to be selected when you protect the
sheet.

By using the help section of Excel you can learn the following.

By default all cells on a worksheet are locked when the sheet is protected under
Tools>Protection>Protect sheet.

First select all cells(ctrl + a)..........twice in 2003

Now go to Format>Cells>Protection and "unlock" them by clearing the option.

OK your way out.

Now select the cells you wish locked then go to..........

Tools>Protection>Protect sheet.............set the "allow users to"
features.........make sure select locked cells is checked.

You can set a password if you like when protecting the sheet.
