locked taskbar

I am working in Windows 2000 and the toolbar that displays
the currently open programs is locked in the middle of the
taskbar. In the quick launch toolbar to the left there is
plenty of room so I would like to slide the toolbar in
that direction but it will not let me do this. When I
right click on the taskbar for a menu I don't see the
option to unlock the taskbar, nor can I select any of the
toolbars (they are listed but are faded). How do I
correct this? Thank you.

NB: I posted one week ago but received no answer and now
it no longer shows up under any of my searchs so I think
that post must have somehow disappeared or been removed.
Someone please help me with this. Thank you.

Hi David,

I'm so sorry that someone didn't get to your
question earlier.
Try this...
You see on the left end of the quick launch, there
is a handle (vertical line)
Place your cursor over it (it will have double
arrows, opposed)
Double click it; double click it again, double
click it again.
It has a three position toggle. Ya got it. Good.

Tip - right click taskbar->choose Toolbars->uncheck
quick launch (yes, I know it disappeared)
Now go back and do the same thing again, but click
on quick start and you have it again (and it also
left a check mark when you clicked on it)

Yes, I know the backwards.
With your left mouse grab the left end handle of
the quick launch bar and drag it to the left all
the way to the Start button. Now, if you did what I
said, the quick launch bar is next to the Start
button. But the Programs bar is squeezed up to the
right end against the "system tray". Here's what
you do; place your mouse pointer over the quick
launch "handle", and double click it as many times
as you like until the Programs bar is in the
correct position.

Also there are other bars like the Desktop, which
can come in handy sometime. Instead of minimizing
all the programs to see the desktop, when you can
open, say My Computer, you can click on the menu
showing the Desktop bar.

I hope at the chance of condescending, you have a
better understanding.

Thanks for the reply. However, I tried the things that
you suggested but to no avail.

When I tried the first suggestion (double clicking on the
handle) nothing happened. When I try this action on 98
and XP verions the Programs toolbar kicks over to the far
right but I got no such response from the 2000 machine
that I am working on.

When I tried the second suggestion (right click taskbar-
choose Toolbars->uncheck>quick launch) I was not able to
perform this action. The menus are there but they are
faded so that I am not able to select them.

Sorry to present such a conundrum but do you have any
other suggestions? Thanks for your help. ~David
