Locked screen

A few weeks ago my computer was aborting - I took it to the shop and
they blamed the hard drive. They replaced it (and also my power
supply). Now it doesn't abort the same way - but has locked up 3
times, where nothing I did changed the image on the screen and I had
to turn off the computer.

Would there be any clues that I can look at to determine what is
wrong?

I'm wondering if I should get some application that uses a lot of disk
and set it up to start with a key stroke so that I can see if the disk
light went on when I start it - that would indicate that the problem
is with the display only.

Hi

Have a look in the Event Viewer. There may be some 'Errors' that could
narrow down the problem.

Does your computer work in Safe Mode? If so, the problem might be
caused by software that is starting automatically?

Do the lock-ups occur consistently when you do certain things? If so,
the problem might be caused by whatever software you are using in that
circumstance.

What changes did you make after you got the computer back from the
shop that supposedly repaired it? If you installed nothing before
encountering lockups, then you may need help from someone who
understands hardware and who has the right diagnostic equipment. You
could take the computer back to the shop that supposedly repaired it
but you have reason to doubt that they know what they are doing if
they gave you back a computer that locks up.

I would take a look at the memory before anything else.
Swap it out and see if it locks up.

They were shotgunning and failed. Get your money back or cancel the
charge.
