Lock up while connected online

If I connect online (dial up) I cannot open any programms. Even
disconnecting takes multiple tries. But, once I do disconnect, all the
windows I had tried to open suddenly pop up. I have opened task manager
(before connecting) to see what is running... System Idle 99 percent and no
network activity. Nothing seems to be tying up the system. When I try to
open something, it does attempt to start (shows up on task manager at zero
percent) but never actually opens. I've run two different full virus scans
and full windows defender - nothing. I've looked at the event viewers -
nothing (well, nothing TERRIBLE). Any ideas... anybody?

Hello Mark,

What sort of programs are these? Names/publishers. By any chance are they communications-type programs?

At least, does your browser work? Do you open it before or after you connect to your dial-up account?

Finally, how much RAM memory does this pc have?

Any program. Task manager will not start. OE will not start. I have the
IE7, but the problem started well after installing that. If I do start OE or
IE7 before connecting on line, they lock up (can't even close them until
disconnected). I suspect something is "listening" on my connection, but I
don't know how to find that out. Like I mentioned before, "system idle" is
at 99 percent and there is no network activity.

As far as what programs... Anything will start when disconnected. NOTHING
will start when connected.

Have there been any problems with the Auto Update? I've noticed that if I
keep terminating "wuauclt.exe" (need to do this a few times since it keeps
auto starting), I can sometimes get on line (like now!).

I'm running XP SP2, 512M RAM

Hello Mark,

Release Notes for Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2
http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie/releasenotes/default.aspx

Beta testers of IE7 Public Preview are asked to post their comments to
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general newsgroup.

On the web:

Tweak your settings for Automatic Updates:
I'd advise, if you are using automatic updates, you configure it to "Notify
me but don't automatically download or install them". e.g. do not have it on
"full auto".

To get to your settings, highlight / single click My Computer on your
desktop > do a RIGHT-Click > select Properties.
Then click on the Automatic Updates tab.

Well, I finally figured out that if I terminate MSASCUI.exe (windows
defender) in task manager everything suddenly works. So I am moving this
problem to the Windows Defender: General news group (Locks up windows when
connected.)

Thanks for your help.
