local device name already in use

i get a windows network error when i try to open a mapped drive.
i can no longer map drives to my server.
says network path is not found.
i can ping to the server and to all the other machines from the server.
the server not longer shows up in network domain.
what happened?
 
i had to re-enable netbios over tcp/ip in WINS even though i don't use WINS.
i thought using netbios was a bad thing.

can anybody offer some insight.
