Can not map a shared drive.

I have a windows 2000 machine that will no longer let me map to a windows
share on a windows 2000 server. I have many other machines that i map drives
drives to and i do not have this problem. it tells me that the drive in not
avalible. yet when i ping the server it responded. i map the drives in the
following manner. \\<ipaddress>\<sharename>.
the other interesting part is that when i go into the computer properties
the "Network ID" button is greyed out. also it will not let me change the
local workgroup name.
the user does have local admin rights.
looking for any ideas as to what might have caused this, i suspect a recent
patch but i do not have any idea as to which one.

The network is only a workgroup.

thanks.

Try mapping the drive using:

Map Use x: = \\ServerName\Foldername (or \\computername\sharename)

typed it at the cmd prompt and if it works put it into a login script, also
try loggin to the computer as admistrator and check the computer name this
way, at least you'll then have some more pointers as to the problem
