Hi, I am studying for my MCSE and one of the things that is pretty confusing
so far is permissions. It never seems very cut and dry. Is there any website
or video that can make sense of this all in layman's terms.

BTW... if you're hoping that the MCSE cert will open the job window
for you, good luck. There are a bazillion people hoping the same
thing and good on-the-job experience trumps no tech job experience.

It is indeed very difficult to understand this from reading alone.

You need practice, which could be either on-the-job or on a test setup.
Don't overlook the possibility of using virtual machines, they can allow you
to set-up a small simulated LAN on one powerful computer, at very low cost.

We-ell. I think each virtual machine needs its own Windows licence,
is that not so?

(Unless you run Linux with Samba instead...)

For testing/study purposes you can use evaluation versions of MS software.
If you need it again after the 180 days or so you can just reinstall. If one
has a Technet subscription you can download MS software for testing /eval
purposes with no time limits and are able to download .ISO files. I use
Windows 2008 Hyper-V on a test computer with 8G of RAM and have a dozen
virtual OS's ready to go as I need. I can create a virtual Windows 2008
Server in about 5 minutes from the .ISO image for it. MS also offers Windows
2008 R2 as a .vhd download. Then all I do is mount it as a virtual server,
logon, and it is ready to go!
